A Rising
Star

Born on January 27, 1998 in Alma, Lac-Saint-Jean, François Gauthier-Drapeau is today one of the most formidable judokas in the world. Competing for Canada in the under-81 kg category, he embodies the new generation of Canadian judo — fierce, intelligent, and decisive on the mat.

His path to the top was far from easy. A serious knee injury in 2018, followed by the forced pause of the COVID-19 pandemic, kept him away from competition for several years. But François came back with even greater determination, turning every setback into strength.

Since his return in 2021, he has strung together remarkable performances on the IJF World Tour. In 2025, he reached the summit: Grand Slam champion in Paris, then Grand Slam champion in Abu Dhabi — two gold titles that lifted him to #2 worldwide, the best ranking of his career.

In 2026, he remains firmly inside the world top 5: fifth at the Pan American Championships in Panama, fifth at the Ulaanbaatar Grand Slam, then back on the podium with silver at the Lima Grand Prix in August. Next up: the World Championships in Baku, 4–11 October 2026.

A graduate in engineering and now pursuing studies in computer science, François trains full-time at the Olympic Stadium in Montreal under the guidance of Antoine Valois-Fortier, 2012 Olympic bronze medallist. A unique coach-athlete duo in Canadian judo history.
